The 10 year project to redevelop Barts hospital and the Royal London hospital, created state-of-the-art medical facilities to meet the short and long-term needs of patients and clinicians. The project involved the rebuild and refurbishment of both hospitals. Built in a conservation area, on a site that has been home to a medical facility for some 900 years, it has been transformed into a state-of-the-art hospital. The project presented several challenges given the relatively small site footprint. These included the high density of building services and the off-site distribution centre used to minimise disruption in the local area and to the existing hospital which remained fully operational throughout the project.
